If you are a decoupage enthusiast who is considering re-selling your handmade creations, it’s essential to understand how copyright applies to the materials you use.

Commercial Use (Selling): Using napkins or rice papers that display copyrighted designs by individual artists for profit, such as selling your crafts online or at markets, can raise legal issues and is generally not allowed without explicit permission.
Not All Designs Are the Same
Each brand and supplier works with artists under different agreements. Some designs are safe to use commercially, while others are not. It is your responsibility to check whether a design is permitted for commercial crafting before you buy or use it for resale purposes.
How to Recognise Artist-Copyrighted Designs
To help you identify which designs are by individual artists—and therefore protected for personal use only—please look for the following signs:

Artist’s name in the product title.

The artist’s signature is visibly printed on the napkin design (often seen in the corner or side of the design, visible in product photos).

Tags under the product photo may include the artist’s name.

“Copyright Warning” notice in red may appear in the product description.

Check the physical product: If you see a “©” (copyright) mark and the artist’s name printed on the napkin itself—usually in the corner—do not use it for commercial purposes.

Important Brand-Specific Guidance
If you are crafting items for commercial purposes using napkins or rice papers, it is strongly advised to avoid using designs from the brands PPD (Paperproducts Design) and Wrendale. These two brands have made it explicitly clear on multiple occasions that they will pursue legal action against anyone using their copyrighted motifs for resale, whether online or at physical markets and fairs.
Most other brands we stock are more flexible, and their representatives have communicated that designs may be used commercially in small quantities, provided that mass production is strictly avoided.
Ambiente Brand Policy
The company Ambiente has expressed that they are pleased to see their napkins being used in creative decoupage projects. They have clearly communicated their support for the crafting community and confirmed that their printed designs may be used for commercial decoupage purposes.
This means you are welcome to incorporate Ambiente napkin designs into handcrafted items that you intend to sell, whether through online platforms, at craft fairs, or in physical shops.
However, it remains important to ensure that each product you create maintains its unique, handmade character and does not enter the realm of industrial or mass production. While Ambiente is generous with their policy, ethical use and respect for the original design are always expected.
